Fitness professionals and personal trainers sit pretty at top of worldwide survey for 2012 trends

Personal training has come out top in a worldwide survey about fitness trends for 2012, proving the increasing demand for highly qualified fitness professionals. The sixth American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends sees educated certified and experienced fitness professionals ranked as the number one trend for 2012, showing that a one size fits all approach simply won’t cut it in today’s ever changing and ever evolving industry.

  • Surprisingly it’s the first time Zumba has made it into the top 20 – reaching number nine it’s said to be the hottest dance exercise worldwide
  • Fitness programs for older adults are ranked fourth in the survey’s predicted trends as the baby boomers from the 1950s are now turning 60 – this provides a great opportunity for health and fitness professionals to provide correct and age-appropriate exercise programmes
  • Trends on the decrease for 2012 include Pilates, stability and ball training

Of the 66.1% of females and 33.9% of males, the top 10 fitness trends were identified as follows:

  1. Educated, certified and experienced fitness professionals
  2. Strength training
  3. Fitness programs for older adults
  4. Exercise and weight loss
  5. Children and obesity
  6. Personal training
  7. Core training
  8. Group personal training
  9. ZUMBA and other dance workouts
  10. Functional fitness

Quotations

Debra Stuart, CEO of Premier Global comments:

These trends are pleasing to see and mirrors what we are doing as a company in terms of the training we are delivering and the qualifications our graduates are gaining. The UK fitness industry is very forward thinking and is playing an influential role in the global fitness landscape. 2012 is going to be an exciting 12 months during which time I know the scene will have evolved even further.
