Teen swim team to make a splash at 2012 Paralympics

A team of local young swimmers from Aylesbury & District Swimming Club have been chosen to work as part of the 2012 Paralympic games.

  • The Young Games Makers, a team made up of 15 to 17 year old swimmers, who train at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury have been selected as the Athlete Kit Team for Aquatics at the coming 2012 games and will be responsible for carrying athletes kit baskets and transporting prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs to and from the Olympic poolside
  • At the beginning of December, the team attended a gruelling three-hour selection event at the London 2012 Head Office in Canary Wharf where the team took part in activities to test communication skills, problem solving skills and their ability to work under pressure
  • The team will begin training on 12 February. Training includes: orientation training, role training and venue training
  • Test event training will follow and the team will practice their role at the Aquatics test event and the British Swimming Championships
  • The team will gain further experience at international events being held at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in the run up to the Paralympic games

Quotations:

Kathy Jeffrey, team manager and swim teacher at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, said:

We feel very privileged to have got this far, the team were full of enthusiasm on the selection day and we were very proud of them! To find out that we have been chosen to take part in the 2012 Paralympics is just amazing.
