The class was held by personal trainer, Tom Doe, in the sports hall at the centre, and was attended by 30 pupils aged 6-7

The class started with a discussion about why people exercise and the benefits of exercise and nutrition, and was quickly followed by the pupils taking part in a PT session

The session included aerobic based exercise, anaerobic (including resistance exercise) based and a mixture of the two

Quotations

Tom commented:

I was very impressed with the interaction from the class, the pupils gave great answers and it was promising to see six year olds with such an awareness of the importance of exercise.

We wanted to get the pupils involved in exercise during the session, and we really wanted to teach them about how different areas of the body are affected by different forms of exercise. The children took part in a variety of exercises including running with small hurdles, tricep dips on a bench and a tug of war, and we think they really enjoyed the fun session.

A 14-year-old tennis player from Harpenden has reached number one in the 14&U GB national rankings after winning her first national-level tournament at 16&U age group last month.

Emily Arbuthnott reached the finals of both 14&U and 16&U age groups at the Sutton Easter tournament

After a weather-disrupted week, Emily had to battle her way through 9 singles matches in just 4 days

On finals day itself, she defeated the #1 seed Molly Reed from Yorkshire 6-1 6-3 in the 16&U final

These results were enough to lift her into the number one slot in the 14&U national rankings, and up to number two in the 16&U rankings, her highest ever positions

Quotations

Liz Jones, Tennis Director at Batchwood Tennis Centre, who directs Emily’s tennis programme, commented:

A number one ranking comes from achieving consistently excellent results over a 12 month period: you have to train hard, prepare thoroughly and then perform day-in day-out at tournaments all year round. The coaching team here at Batchwood is genuinely thrilled to have the top ranked player in her age group training here – she is a great role model to all of our younger players and we are looking forward to helping her take the next step up into international tournaments over the coming year.

As a member of the AEGON FutureStars programme run by the LTA, Emily has also recently been invited on a national training camp and a trip abroad with other top British players – these opportunities will really help her understand where she needs to develop her game.
