March 2nd: Trevor Loveday reports on how winners of the first round of Ofgem’s Low Carbon Network Fund are spending their money.
With £64 million available – but not guaranteed – for each year of the Low Carbon Network Fund (LCNF), it is perhaps a reflection of the quality of the proposals for the first year that all the money was allocated. ”If submissions in any year are not up to the required standard, the money will not be allocated. There is no roll over,” says Ofgem partner for distribution Rachel Fletcher.
The money was the first tranche of the £500 million LCNF unveiled in August 2009 as part of the five-year price controls for power distribution networks, which have been in place since April 2010. The fund comprises a £64 million-a-year competitive element; £80 million allocated directly to the distribution companies over the five years to help fund small projects; and £100 million over the five years as a discretionary award for projects that bring particularly high value.
